KURT BUTTIGIEG + YASMIN KUYMIZAKIS
WEDNESDAY, 9 October, 8pm (doors 7:30pm)
Malta Society of Arts, Valletta
“CRACKLE AND MEMORY”
Following its Summer Break, Sustain-Delay returns with concert in memory of our pasts through sound. In this unique live performance , experimental musician and memory monger Kurt Buttigieg joins Yasmin Kuymizakis, known otherwise as “JOON”, for an experimental set using personal archival content. Kurt Buttigieg and Yasmin Kuymizakis will weave together their personal and collective memories through sound.
This event marks Yasmin Kuymizakis’ return to the experimental. Best known through her work as JOON, blending lush synths, hypnotic beats and layered vocals, Yasmin’s breadth as a musician far exceeds the experimental synth pop that she is synonymous for as she also draws on her background in sound design and sonic experimentation.
Kurt Buttigieg has “been involved in the long and short fringes of experimental music for years – gawking at it, making it, writing about it and organising gigs”. He is the artistic director of Sustain-Delay, founded and runs the Complex Holiday label. Time and memory, as well as the organic vs the inorganic are recurrent themes in his music.
For this concert, the themes of memory and time are reinterpreted through location as the foundation for artistic exploration, reflecting their individual and communal interactions with Malta—a place they both call home despite the long time spent living abroad or on the road. Space as sound, and sound as shared and divergent histories of home (wherever that may be).

“MUSIC FROM STONES AND PLANTS”
Pick axes touching upon limestone, the subtle pulses of energy moving through the stems and leaves of flora echoing in Valletta. For its first session exploring sound, Sustain-Delay presents Italian Duo Molom (Milena Berta & Alessandro Pedretti). Molom will be performing using real-time sampling of stone working sounds such as the noise of chisels, pieces of stone that are detached from rough blocks and hammers being struck upon stone channelled through sound manipulation and electronic compositions.
This night will be opened by Alien Montesin who will be DJing the natural world and Naqara who will be sourcing sounds from plants and mixing them with sparse ambient and IDM.

“MEDIEVAL [+] AMBIENT”
The music of medieval Europe – of the vielles in monasteries and the plucked lyres – passed down through centuries, now lies in the here and now of people experimenting with those pieces of time preserved.
On 25 April, the Malta Society of Arts welcomes the soundworld of French musician, soprano and medieval researcher Welleda Muller falling into the lush and expansive ambient music of Robert Farrugia.
The atmosphere will be further set by Anti- (Fabio D’Amato), through a topical-but-surprising DJ set mixing related sounds with those beyond.
In the latter part of the performance, Welleda has a surprise: the movements and songs of mediaeval French washerwomen and artisans will fill the Malta Society of Arts.
This event forms part of the Malta Society of Arts’ 2024 Performing Arts Programme which is being supported by Arts Council Malta. This event is also supported by French Embassy in Malta and Alliance Française.

“ECHOES AND SHADOWS”
Making his Malta debut, Sustain-Delay welcomes trailblazing legend Andy Stott as the headliner for its upcoming gig which will take us outside of the Malta Society of Arts and to Liquid Club.
Led by Stott’s distinct sound of disembodied voices and saturated rhythms with techno and house stylings, this will be a night to remember.
Further danceable sonic experimentation will also feature, through sets by local staples Tina and Giaçinté, who will be bringing their magmatic sound into Liquid Club, as well as a set by Gh⊕s††, bringing us into his simultaneously haunting and melodic landscape.
